Symposium van Contactgroep Signum, 15 december 2017

Op vrijdag 15 december 2017 vindt in Zutphen het jaarlijkse Signum-symposium plaats. Dit jaar staat het in het teken van religieuze gemeenschappen in laatmiddeleeuws Gelre. Niet alleen komt het functioneren van de seculiere kapittels binnen het hertogdom ter sprake, ook zal aandacht besteed worden aan de devotie van adellijke vrouwen, de geschiedenis van vrouwenconventen in laatmiddeleeuws Zutphen en de rol van kloosters als geldschieters voor landsheer en steden. Op deze manier wil dit symposium een nieuwe impuls geven aan het onderzoek naar de sociaal-economische en institutionele geschiedenis van kerkelijke instellingen in Gelre.

Workshop ‘Transcending boundaries? Solidarity in the pre-industrial period’, 27 oktober

De KU Leuven campus Kulak Kortrijk en de Universiteit Antwerpen organiseren samen op 27 oktober de workshop Transcending boundaries? Solidarity in the pre-industrial period met als keynote speaker prof. dr. Gervase Rosser van de University of Oxford. In deze workshop zullen de huidige grenzen van het onderzoek naar solidariteit en armenzorg opgezocht worden. CML is hiring two PhDs and one Associate Professor

2 PhD fellowships are available at the Centre for Medieval Literature (Odense, Denmark),  starting February 1, 2018. The fellowships run for 3 years and the successful candidates must hold an MA within medieval textual culture (literature, philology, history, religion or other with emphasis on texts and/or languages). The proposed research project for the PhD must fall within one of the Centre’s main themes, Canon and Library, Imperial Languages or Transformations and Translocations. Mediëvistendag, ‘Representations of East and West in the Middle Ages’, 27 oktober 2017, Nijmegen

On 27 October 2017, the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies, together with the Flemish Medievalist Association, will be holding the annual Medieval Studies Day, this time in Nijmegen. The organisation is in the hands of the medievalists of Radboud University.

One of the main aims of the annual Medieval Studies Day is the exchange of information about recent developments in the field via presentations of research projects in the field of Medieval Studies (including at least all new projects), and via short presentations by PhD students (including at least all new students). Those PhD students who wish to present their current research are asked to read the announcement via this link and send their proposal by 5 October to Maaike van Berkel (m.vanberkel@let.ru.nl).

Uitnodiging vernissage tentoonstelling ‘Pieter Pourbus en de vergeten meesters’

Van 13 oktober 2017 tot en met 21 januari 2018 loopt in het Brugse Groeningemuseum de tentoonstelling Pieter Pourbus en de vergeten meesters.
 
Het college van Burgemeester en Schepenen van de stad Brugge, de directie van Musea Brugge en de staf van het Groeningemuseum hebben het genoegen u uit te nodigen op de vernissage van deze tentoonstelling op 12 oktober. Meer informatie is te vinden in de onderstaande flyer.
 
Onbekend maakt onbemind: dit geldt zeker voor de Brugse meesters uit de zestiende eeuw. Ambrosius Benson, Lancelot Blondeel, Pieter Pourbus en de familie Claeissens staan in de schaduw van hun voorgangers, de Vlaamse primitieven en hun tijdgenoten uit Antwerpen. De gouden eeuw van Brugge is voorbij en de afzetmarkt veranderd. Met het roemrijke artistieke verleden als inspiratiebron ontstaat er in Brugge een geheel eigen stijl. Hoog tijd voor een focus op deze vergeten meesters!

Essay prize “Bernard Hamilton” for Crusader Studies

In honour of the former president and current honorary president of the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE), Professor Bernard Hamilton, and in recognition of his enormous contribution to the society and support of young scholars, the SSCLE will award an annual essay prize.

The Rules

  • The essay should be on any aspect of history, art history or archaeology of the Crusader period or otherwise relating to Crusader studies.
  • Any current doctoral student, or an individual who is within two years of receiving their doctorate is eligible to enter the competition.
  • The essay, excluding references and bibliography must not normally exceed 6,000 words and must conform with the editorial requirements of the SSCLE journal Crusades (available on the SSCLE webpage and in the Bulletin/Journal)).
  • Essays submitted elsewhere for competitions or publication will not be eligible for the prize.
  • The essays must be submitted as electronic copies as an e-mail attachment, to Professor Jonathan Phillips (email: J.P.Phillips@rhul.ac.uk) the SSCLE Postgraduate Officer, by 31 December 2018 (by 1 December in subsequent years)
  • Essays should be accompanied by details of the author’s name, address (including email address), institutional affiliation and degree registration.

The Decision

  • The essays will be read by a jury consisting of a panel drawn from the Committee of the SSCLE and the editors of Crusades.
  • The jury panel reserves the right not to award a prize in any particular year.
  • The jury decision will be announced in April.
  • The decision of the jury is final.
  • The winner of the essay competition will have their paper put forward to Crusades where, subject to the normal procedures of satisfactory reports from two anonymous external referees (and, if required, the chance to modify, amend or improve the piece on their advice), it will be published under the title ‘Bernard Hamilton Essay Prize’.
  • Names of prize winners will be posted on the SSCLE webpage and announced in the Bulletin.

Symposium “Vergeten Reformaties, Utrecht, 6-7 oktober 2017

De Vereniging voor Nederlandse Kerkgeschiedenis organiseert samen met de tentoonstelling Luther in Museum Catharijneconvent, het NWO-onderzoeksproject ‘From monastery to market place’ aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en Luce (Tilburg School of Catholic Theology) twee congresdagen onder de titel “Vergeten reformaties”. Historici van verschillende universiteiten zullen hun licht laten schijnen op onderbelichte en vergeten aspecten van reformaties in de lange zestiende eeuw.

Op 6 oktober 2017 staat de diversiteit van de Reformatie centraal. Onder de titel “Vergeten reformaties: Lokale ontwikkelingen in de Nederlanden in de lange zestiende eeuw” wordt gekeken naar de ontwikkelingen op met name het platteland. De tweede dag “Vergeten reformaties: Verspreiding van nieuwe overtuigingen” op 7 oktober heeft de kracht van het woord als rode draad.
