Extended deadline for registration Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’

The deadline for registration for the Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’ is extended to 10 December 2014. The School’s PhD Students are specially invited to send in an application. External PhD Students (‘buitenpromovendi’) are welcome to apply as well.

Theme

This conference is devoted to communication and knowledge in the Middle Ages and is aimed at graduate students (both Research-MA and PhD) from all relevant disciplines. Students are invited to submit an abstract for a paper relating to their current research. The theme is defined broadly so as to attract participants with diverse backgrounds. Proposals may cover such topics as transmission channels, material means of communication, manuscripts as objects, textual genres related to communication, oral versus written communication, education, the medieval understanding of (or attitude to) communication and/or knowledge, comparing practices across space or time, etc. The conference aims to be a platform where graduate students can learn about current research in medieval communication (broadly understood), practice their presentation and chairing skills, and exchange ideas with peers from another research culture.

Participants and Papers

The program allows for thirty participants: fifteen Research-MA and seven PhD students affiliated to the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek, as well as eight PhD students from the University of Cambridge. Regarding the Research-MA students, priority will be given to those enrolled in the Graduate Programme (Special Training Programme) of the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek. PhD students are invited to give a twenty-minute paper, while MA-students will give shorter papers of ten minutes. The conference will start at 9 am on Friday 20 February and will run to 2 pm on Sunday 22 February. Lunch and dinner will be provided at no charge. Students from the UK are offered three nights of hotel (Thursday, Friday and Saturday night); Dutch participants are expected to find their own accommodation, or make suitable travel arrangements.

Registration

Students interested in participating are requested to submit an abstract (in English) of c. 250 words (PDF) to Erik Kwakkel (Dutch students) or Rosamond McKitterick (UK students). In addition, students are asked to submit a one-page letter of motivation (PDF). Selection is based on both your letter and abstract.

Autumn School “Latin Paleography” & “Medieval Liturgy” (Gent, 20-22/10/2014)

Het Henri Pirenne Instituut (UGent) organiseert van maandag 20 t.e.m. woensdag 22 oktober 2014 twee parallelle autumn schools over Latijnse paleografie en middeleeuwse liturgie. Deze zijn specifiek bedoeld voor masterstudenten en doctorandi in de middeleeuwse studies. Men kan zich voor een van de twee onderwerpen inschrijven. Voor de cursus paleografie is een basiskennis van het Latijn vereist. In beide cursussen is het Engels de voertaal. Er worden maximaal twintig deelnemers toegelaten per cursus. Masterclass “Solidarity and Togetherness” (Groningen, 1-2/07/2014)

Als onderdeel van het driejarige project “Solidarity and Togetherness. Forms, ideals, rituals, rhetoric and institutions of community ethos“, organiseren de National Research School for Medieval Studies en de National Research School in Classical Studies (OIKOS) van de universiteit Groningen een masterclass rond duurzaam burgerschap in premodern Europa. De masterclass is specifiek bedoeld voor onderzoeksmasters en doctorandi. Deelnemers moeten vooraf vier artikels lezen en een beknopt essay insturen. Meer informatie vindt u in bijgaande flyer.

Summerschool “La bibliothèque de Clairvaux” (Troyes, 26-30/08)

De Médiathèque du Grand Troyes organiseert in samenwerking met Biblissima en het Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (CNRS) een summerschool getiteld “Reconstituer une bibliothèque médiévale aujourd’hui. L’exemple de Clairvaux“. De summerschool gaat door in Troyes van dinsdag 26 tot zaterdag 30 augustus 2014. Het aantal deelnemers is beperkt en er wordt vooraf geselecteerd. Beurzen Atelier Doctoral “Sources pour l’histoire du travail” (Arezzo)

Van 30 juni t.e.m. 4 juli gaat in Arezzo de zevende summerschool door van de Sources pour l’histoire économique européenne voor jonge onderzoekers (pre- en postdoc). Deze keer wordt er specifiek aandacht geschonken aan (bronnen voor) de geschiedenis van de arbeid van de dertiende tot de zeventiende eeuw. De organisatie laat weten dat er 15 beurzen zijn voor verblijfskosten. Geïnteresseerden dienen hun CV, een aanbevelings- en motivatiebrief en de samenvatting van hun lezing vóór 30 april 2014 te mailen naar secrmod@efrome.it. Meer informatie vindt u hier.

Studiedag Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium (Lille, 15/11)

Op vrijdag 15 november 2013 gaat aan de Université Lille 3 (Villeneuve d’Ascq) een studiedag door getiteld “Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium: Mémoire et identité en Lotharingie au début du XIe siècle“. Op het programma staan presentaties van het meest recente onderzoek op deze uitzonderlijke bron voor de geschiedenis van de bisdommen Arras en Cambrai.

Conference ‘Shaping Authority’ (Leuven, Dec 2013)

LECTIO, the Leuven Centre for the study of the transmission of texts and ideas in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, kindly invites you to attend the next Conference, entitled ‘Shaping Authority’. How did a person become an authority in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance?

In this two-day conference (see the digital flyer with schedule) we will focus on the mechanisms and strategies by which participants in intellectual life at large have shaped the authority of historical persons; and which circumstances have led to the disintegrations of the authority of persons previously considered to be authoritative.

This conference takes place on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December 2013 in the Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe, Janseniusstraat 1, 3000 Leuven.
