Het samenwerkingsverband van Vlaamse mediëvisten
Op dinsdag 6 DECEMBER 2016 organiseert het Gentse Stadsarchief in samenwerking met de Vriendenkring van het Stadsarchief (GOF) een publieksavond in De Zwarte Doos: “200 jaar Stadsarchief”. Onderzoeker Timo van Havere zal er een voordracht verzorgen over ‘de ontsluiting van het stadsarchief Gent, 1817-1917’.

Op 22 november gaat de jaarlijkse prestigieuze Pirenne-lezing door, georganiseerd door de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek. Dit jaar werd dr. Patrick Lantschner (UCL) uitgenodigd om te spreken over ‘The Other Crisis in the Age of the Crusades: Political Volatility and City-States in the Later Medieval Mediterranean World’.
De lezing gaat van start om 18h30 in zaal de Oude Infirmerie in Het Pand, Onderbergen 1, 9000 Gent. VWM-leden worden na de lezing van harte uitgenodigd om na te praten op de receptie die doorgaat op dezelfde locatie.
The Other Crisis in the Age of the Crusades: Political Volatility and City-States in the Later Medieval Mediterranean World
Wars between states were only one dimension of the crisis which the Mediterranean world experienced in the Age of the Crusades (c.1100-1500). This period saw another, often overlooked, crisis of political authority within many states across the Christian and Islamic spheres of the Mediterranean world. The crystallisation and subsequent transformation of city-states was reflective of the volatility and propensity to civil war and conflict which was inherent in many of the diverse political systems of the later medieval Mediterranean world. This lecture therefore returns to two themes that were central to Pirenne’s work: the division between Christian and Islamic spheres, and the place of cities in medieval civilisation. Taking a comparative perspective on the most strongly urbanised regions of Italy, Syria and the Islamic West, this lecture investigates the conditions under which cities turned into important arenas of political confrontation and how they could sometimes also be among the greatest obstacles to the consolidation of states.
Patrick Lantschner
Dr. Patrick Lantschner behaalde zijn doctoraat in Oxford in 2011 en is momenteel Lecturer aan het departement History van University College London. Zijn onderzoek behelst de vergelijking en transnationale benadering van steden en politieke organisatie in de Europese en Islamitische wereld van de late Middeleeuwen. Specifiek heeft hij zich totnogtoe toegespitst op stedelijke opstanden in Italië, de Lage Landen en het Nabije Oosten, en op het fenomeen van de ‘gefragmenteerde stad’.

Op het maandelijkse seminarie georganiseerd door het Centrum voor Turkse Studies van de Universiteit Gent geeft op dinsdag 17 mei 2016 Prof. dr. Jens Kreinach (Wichita State University, VS) een lezing met als onderwerp: “De verering van de heilige Petrus en Habib-i Neccar onder christenen en moslims en beschrijvingen van de oorsprong van het christendom in Antiochië /Antakya, Turkije”. De lezing vindt plaats in het UFO-gebouw, in de Pirenne-zaal, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 35, 9000 Gent en start om 19u. Meer informatie over de lezing vind je hier.
Op uitnodiging van Art & Héritance komt Michel Pastoureau, specialist kleurensymboliek en heraldiek, eerstdaags naar Brussel en Leuven. Op maandag 4 april om 18h houdt hij in de Koninklijke academie te Brussel een lezing over de kleur rood. Op dinsdag 5 april om 15h spreekt de mediëvist in het M-Museum Leuven over “L’historien face à l’animal: l’exemple du Moyen Âge”.

Het Ruusbroecgenootschap organiseert naar jaarlijkse traditie een reeks van vier Voorjaarslezingen. De lezingen gaan door in Antwerpen, telkens op vrijdag.

Daarnaast organiseert het Ruusbroecgenootschap deze zomer (27 juni-1 juli 2016) een Summer School over het religieuze boek voor junior researchers (PhD en postdoc). Het thema dit jaar is: Religious Manuscripts, Handpress Books and Prints (15th–19th centuries). Collections, materials and methodologies. Naast docenten van het Ruusbroecgenootschap zullen ook Pierre Delsaerdt, Falk Eisermann, Erik Kwakkel, David McKitterick en Hubert Meeus lessen verzorgen.

The session “Cultural History of the Middle Ages: Theory and history of the Field”, for PhD and ReMA students, will focus on the recently published textbook *Cultuurgeschiedenis van de Middeleeuwen* [Cultural history of the Middle Ages] by Rob Meens and Carine van Rhijn (eds.), WBooks, Zwolle 2015. The book cover discusses the Dutch phrase *middeleeuwse toestanden*
(literally ‘Medieval situations’), which is used to describe ‘dark’,
‘primitive’, ‘unpleasant’ situations. This image of the period from 500 to
1500 AD is based on Humanist ideas of the ‘Middle Ages’ as a period of
stagnation or decline. However, this period has also been greatly admired
by some as it saw the birth of modern European nations. Catholics regarded
the Middle Ages as the one period in history in which Europe was truly
Christian, whereas others saw it as a period full of superstition – and
still do. The book uses these kinds of opinions and prejudices as a basis
for an introduction to the culture of the Middle Aes. It shows how such
opinions emerged and how historians today think about this period. The book
provides knowledge of Medieval culture as well as reflection on how we
think about the Middle Ages.

Op donderdagavond 3 december 2015 wordt de nieuwe KANTL-publicatie Het Gruuthusehandschrift. Literatuur, muziek, devotie rond 1400, onder redactie van Frank Willaert, Jos Koldeweij & Johan Oosterman voorgesteld. Herman Brinkman spreekt over zijn uitgave van het handschrift, die onlangs bij uitgeverij Verloren verscheen. De avond wordt afgesloten met een concert van de ensembles Ultreya en Pandora² met liederen uit het Gruuthusehandschrift.
