The Central European University in Budapest announces its 2015 SUN program (www.summer.ceu.hu). The course list can be found below. The program poster or specific course flyers can be downloaded from http://www.summer.ceu.hu/node/88.

We invite applications from graduate students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals in the social sciences and humanities. The general application deadline is February 14, 2015. Financial aid is available for most courses.

Lezing Erasmushuis 11 december

Het Erasmushuis in Brussel organiseert regelmatig activiteiten om de interesse voor  Erasmus’ werken, de Renaissance en de klassieke auteurs te bevorderen.

Op donderdag 11 december organiseert het Erasmushuis, samen met de Fundatio Melissa en de stichting Humanitas Europae, een avond in het teken van de muziek en de Latijnse wereld, naar aanleiding van de publicatie in Franse vertaling van de geschiedenis van de Latijnse literatuur van Michael von Albrecht. Na een museumrondleiding in het Latijn volgt een lezing door Prof. von Albrecht over Ovidius’ Heldinnenbrieven, getiteld “Briseis, critica van het mannelijk geslacht & Ovidius, literatuurcriticus”. Het strijkkwartet CoryFeye sluit de avond af met een kort concert. Het evenement is gratis, mits reservatie.

Extended deadline for registration Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’

The deadline for registration for the Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’ is extended to 10 December 2014. The School’s PhD Students are specially invited to send in an application. External PhD Students (‘buitenpromovendi’) are welcome to apply as well.

  • Open to: Research-MA and PhD students registered through the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek, as well as PhD students from the University of Cambridge

Theme

This conference is devoted to communication and knowledge in the Middle Ages and is aimed at graduate students (both Research-MA and PhD) from all relevant disciplines. Students are invited to submit an abstract for a paper relating to their current research. The theme is defined broadly so as to attract participants with diverse backgrounds. Proposals may cover such topics as transmission channels, material means of communication, manuscripts as objects, textual genres related to communication, oral versus written communication, education, the medieval understanding of (or attitude to) communication and/or knowledge, comparing practices across space or time, etc. The conference aims to be a platform where graduate students can learn about current research in medieval communication (broadly understood), practice their presentation and chairing skills, and exchange ideas with peers from another research culture.

Participants and Papers

The program allows for thirty participants: fifteen Research-MA and seven PhD students affiliated to the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek, as well as eight PhD students from the University of Cambridge. Regarding the Research-MA students, priority will be given to those enrolled in the Graduate Programme (Special Training Programme) of the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek. PhD students are invited to give a twenty-minute paper, while MA-students will give shorter papers of ten minutes. The conference will start at 9 am on Friday 20 February and will run to 2 pm on Sunday 22 February. Lunch and dinner will be provided at no charge. Students from the UK are offered three nights of hotel (Thursday, Friday and Saturday night); Dutch participants are expected to find their own accommodation, or make suitable travel arrangements.

Registration

Students interested in participating are requested to submit an abstract (in English) of c. 250 words (PDF) to Erik Kwakkel (Dutch students) or Rosamond McKitterick (UK students). In addition, students are asked to submit a one-page letter of motivation (PDF). Selection is based on both your letter and abstract.

Nominatie Mike Kestemont Eos — Gouden Pipet 2014

Mike Kestemont (wiens termijn als VWM-secretaris binnenkort afloopt) is een van de vijf genomineerden voor de “Gouden Pipet”, editie 2014, van het populair-wetenschappelijke magazine Eos. Deze prijs bekroont de meest beloftevolle onderzoeker van het moment. Hoewel de prijs door een jury wordt toegekend, wordt er ook een publieksprijs uitgereikt.

Mike Kestemont is literair historicus en mediëvist: het verdient nadruk dat het de eerste keer is dat een geesteswetenschapper voor deze prijs werd genomineerd. Door uw stem uit te brengen voor Mike kunt u daarom ook de geesteswetenschappen een aanzienlijk duwtje in de rug geven wat zichtbaarheid betreft. Lidgeld 2014-2015 & Herinnering Pirenne-lezing

Met de Pirenne-lezing volgende week (waarvoor u nog altijd kan inschrijven) is het nieuwe VWM-werkingsjaar officieel geopend! Dit gaat meteen ook gepaard met onze jaarlijkse oproep tot het betalen van het lidgeld (15€). Aangezien de VWM voor haar werking geheel afhankelijk is van haar ledenbijdragen, is het bijzonder belangrijk dat wie lid wenst te blijven zijn lidgeld betaalt ten laatste 15 december! U kan dit doen via overschrijving of via automatische domiciliëring – het VWM-rekeningnummer en informatie over domiciliëring vindt u hier terug. Als lid kan je deelnemen aan alle activiteiten georganiseerd door de VWM en geniet je verschillende voordelen (gratis naar de Boekenbeurs via Brepols Publishers, …).

Misschien is uw afdeling/onderzoeksgroep/… intussen versterkt met nieuwe leden. Motiveer hen gerust om ook lid te worden van de VWM! Lid worden doe je door een email te sturen aan sara.moens@ugent.be of renske.vannie@uantwerpen.be én uiteraard je lidgeld te betalen.

We kijken er naar uit jullie dit jaar opnieuw talrijk op de VWM-samenkomsten te mogen verwelkomen!

Cursusdag VWM 4 dec

Op 4 december organiseert de VWM haar jaarlijkse cursusdag. Die vindt dit jaar plaats aan de Universiteit Gent en staat in het teken van ‘Medieval Maps and Spaces’. Meer informatie en het voorlopige programma vindt u hier terug. U kan inschrijven voor de cursusdag door een mail te sturen aan sara.moens@ugent.be. De cursus is gratis voor VWM-leden, niet-leden betalen 15€.
