The School of Historical & Philosophical Inquiry is a dynamic team with a reputation for innovative approaches to teaching and research excellence. Our disciplinary groupings of Classics and Ancient History, Studies in Religion, Philosophy and History are united by this common intellectual quest, and are mutually reinforced and supported by each discipline’s distinct approaches, perspectives and methodologies.

The role

The primary purpose of the position is to work with and alongside the Head of the School (HoS), to conduct research in the broad area of medieval cultural and social history. The postdoctoral fellow will undertake her/his own research project, as well as make a contribution to teaching in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry.

The person

Applicants should have completed a PhD within the past three years in the area of history, medieval history or medieval studies. They should have demonstrated capacity to conduct research of a high quality in the area of medieval history; excellent academic skills; capacity to write academic publications of a high quality; some undergraduate or postgraduate teaching experience in history; relevant language knowledge including some knowledge of Latin; and ability to work as part of a team.

Remuneration

With The Great Transition. Climate, Disease and Society in the Late Medieval World (CUP, 2016), Bruce Campbell has rewritten the history of both the Black Death and the European economy in the later Middle Ages. After the Great Transition the economic history of the pre-industrial world can no longer be told without taking into account climate and ecology. The Great Transition also fundamentally challenges our view of post-Black Death Europe: once the tipping point of the 1340s had been passed, Europe gradually found itself in conditions which no longer resembled the world of growth and expansion of the 12th and 13th centuries. Instead repeated plague outbreaks, demographic contraction, bullion famine, economic depression and commercial isolation characterized Europe between c. 1390 and c. 1490. For historians of the ‘Burgundian’ Low Countries, this might be a rather ‘shocking’ perspective. While not dismissing the crisis of the Later Middle Ages all together, historians of the Low Countries often tend to focus on the persistent urban economic, political and cultural dynamics of this period. Did the urban Low Countries escape the ‘systemic changes’ of the Later Middle Ages? Or, were they rather the exception to the rule, an island of ‘prosperity amidst adversity’? Or do we have to reassert the scale and depth of economic contraction and declining employment in the Later Middle Ages, even in the core regions of the Low Countries?

In this afternoon seminar, Bruce Campbell presents recent estimates of English GDP per head, daily real wage rates of men and women and annual earnings. These invite us to rethink the transformation of labour after the Black Death, starting from debates on the so-called Golden Age of Labour, declining employment and a growing leisure preference. His presentation will be followed by two papers on the Low Countries.

Séminaires-conférences du Centre « Pratiques médiévales de l’écrit » de l’Université de Namur

Le centre de recherche « Pratiques médiévales de l’écrit » (institut de recherche PaTHs) de l’l’Université de Namur propose pour cette année 2018 une une nouvelle série de séminaires-conférences.

Le premier rendez-vous est fixé au 21 février prochain : Richard Sharpe, de l’Université d’Oxford viendra donner une conférence sur les chartes de la période anglo-normande en Angleterre et en Écosse. Les prochains rendez-vous sont à retrouver ici.

Les séances se tiendront à chaque fois de 16h à 18h, au local L34 (séminaire d’Histoire), de la Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres. Le centre de recherche PraME a été créé en 2009 à l’initiative des historiens médiévistes et des philologues romanistes de l’UNamur. Il réunit actuellement une vingtaine de chercheurs qui consacrent leurs travaux aux multiples facettes de l’activité d’écriture à travers l’Europe « latine » durant le Moyen Âge. L’un de ses objectifs principaux est de promouvoir les collaborations à tous les niveaux dans ce secteur de la médiévistique, grâce à des initiatives de coordination et de décloisonnement de la recherche. CfP “New Directions in Medieval Religious history” Dartmouth College, USA, May 29-June 2, 2018

Applications are invited for the second annual Dartmouth Summer History Institute on “New Directions in Medieval Religious History.”  The aim of the Summer History Institute is to bring together the most promising young scholars working on medieval religious history to read and workshop pieces of their historical writing, as they embark on the transition from dissertation to book, in order to take stock of emerging considerations and approaches across the field.  We are interested in all aspects of religious history, including its links to political, social, cultural, and intellectual history.  Applicants should be in the process of completing their Ph.D. dissertation or in the early stages of revising the Ph.D. for publication as a book.  (Students finishing their Ph.D. dissertation in spring or summer of 2018 are encouraged to apply.)  Prior to the workshop, each participant will furnish a draft article or working dissertation/book chapter central to or exemplary of their larger historical intervention, which participants will discuss at the Institute in the company of invited senior scholars.  In addition to these workshop sessions on individual pieces of writing, the Institute will include a variety of fora (receptions, dinners, and lectures) to discuss theoretical and methodological issues.

Selected participants in the Institute will receive room and board as well as a subvention for travel up to $1000.  Submitted pieces should be in English (preferred), French, or German.  Participants should have a good command of spoken English.

1 PhD ‘Prophylactic Healthcare and the Urban Public’ University of Amsterdam

The Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH), one of the six research schools which at the Faculty of Humanities carry out research under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research, currently has a vacant PhD position as part of the ERC-project Healthscaping, led by prof. G. Geltner

Project description

HealthScaping traces the development and impact of preventative healthcare policies, medical discourses and social and religious practices in the continent’s two most urbanized regions in the later Middle Ages, Italy and the Low Countries. The project taps numerous written, material and visual sources and archaeological data from several sites, and examines them also by critically engaging the insights of governmentality studies, cultural-spatial analysis and actor-network theory. A multidisciplinary team, also working in a Geographical Information Systems environment and generating innovative urban health maps, will recover earlier societies’ struggles with domestic and industrial waste, travel and labor hazards, food quality, and social and religious behaviors considered harmful or dangerous.

Within this framework, a PhD candidate proficient in Latin and the relevant vernacular/s will chart and analyse the dissemination of medical knowledge pertaining to prophylactic healthcare passed along several textual and visual conduits beyond the boundaries of traditional medical literature and in two distinct spheres. First, it will track the transmission of medical knowledge among the urban population – identifying medical arguments bearing upon the non-naturals (including quality of air and water, diet, evacuations, motion and rest), hygiene and the senses and their interpretation of physical and spiritual wellbeing in schoolrooms, from the pulpit as well as in urban households. Secondly, it will contextualize the dissemination of prophylactic knowledge and its application in normative sources regulating behaviour, for instance in municipal and guild statutes, regulations of brotherhoods and monastic regulae produced especially in cities in Italy and/or the Low Countries. Researching the interplay of arguments between medical knowledge, good citizenship and social hygiene in diverse behavioral scripts, this research will identify and study the specific urban milieus where medical knowledge was adapted and disseminated, thereby offering a unique insight into the levels of public health awareness and responses thereto, both of compliance and resistance, beyond academic environs.

The PhD candidate’s tasks will include:

  • completion and defence of a PhD thesis within 4 years;
  • writing two peer-reviewed scholarly articles in major journals;
  • contributing to the project database;
  • active participation in and organization of project activities.

Requirements

The successful applicant must have:

  • a completed Research MA or equivalent in medieval history or a related field in the Humanities;
  • knowledge of premodern health and urban history;
  • research experience in archives and manuscript libraries;
  • a thorough command of Latin and relevant vernaculars (Middle Dutch and/or Italian), excellent English and a working knowledge of pertinent modern languages, e.g. French, German, Italian, Spanish;
  • enthusiasm for collaborative, multidisciplinary research;
  • strong organizational skills.

Appointment

The appointment will be for 30.4 hours per week (0.8 FTE) for a maximum period of four years at the Department of History, European Studies & Religious Studies of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. The research will be carried out under the aegis of ASH. The appointment is initially for a period of 16 months; contingent on satisfactory performance it will be extended by a maximum of 32 months. The intended starting date of the contract is 1 September 2018. The gross monthly salary (on a full-time basis) will range from €2,222 during the first year to €2,840 during the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Vacature 1 postdoc IRIS-Scripta (Parijs)

L’Initiative de Recherche Interdisciplinaire Stratégique “Scripta-PSL. Histoire et pratiques de l’écrit” lance un appel à candidatures pour un contrat post-doctoral d’une durée de douze mois, à compter du 1er mai 2018 (date négociable).

Conditions d’éligibilité

Sont éligibles tous les post-doctorants sans distinction, qu’ils aient soutenu leur thèse dans un établissement de PSL, ailleurs en France ou à l’étranger, qu’ils soient présentement rattachés à un laboratoire ou une institution, ou non.

On attend du post-doctorant qu’un travail original et significatif résulte du post-doctorat. On attend également qu’il ou elle s’investisse dans les activités de Scripta, p. ex. sous la forme d’une intervention aux colloques ou aux séminaires de Scripta.

Critères d’évaluation

L’évaluation se fera sur la base des critères suivants :

  • Adéquation à la problématique scientifique de Scripta-PSL (voir le descriptif dans le document ci-joint) ;
  • Insertion dans au moins deux axes de recherche de Scripta, auxquels le projet aura vocation à contribuer scientifiquement ;
  • Qualité scientifique, précision et originalité du projet (p. ex. mise en œuvre de compétences rares, interdisciplinarité, etc.) ;
  • Profil du candidat (parcours antérieur, publications).

Les candidats retenus au terme d’une première évaluation sur la base du dossier écrit seront invités à présenter leur projet devant une commission comprenant les membres du Comité de Pilotage de Scripta fin mars, soit directement, soit par vidéo-conférence.

Vacature Expert onroerend erfgoed Regionaal Landschap de Voorkempen

Regionaal Landschap de Voorkempen zoekt een expert onroerend erfgoed (voltijds, contract van onbepaalde duur). Masters in de geschiedenis komen in aanmerking.

Regionaal Landschap de Voorkempen is een vzw die actief is in het Noordwesten van de
provincie Antwerpen (Brasschaat, Brecht, Essen, Kalmthout, Kapellen, Malle, Ranst,
Schilde, Schoten, Stabroek, Wijnegem, Wommelgem, Wuustwezel, Zandhoven en Zoersel
en 3 districten van de stad Antwerpen ). Onze projectwerking balanceert op het snijvlak
van landschapszorg, natuurbehoud en -ontwikkeling, natuureducatie -en recreatie, het
zoeken en vergroten van een maatschappelijk draagvlak hiervoor. We realiseren
projecten (op terrein) dankzij de steun van de Vlaamse overheid, de Provincie Antwerpen
en de gemeentebesturen uit de streek.
In samenwerking met 9 gemeenten (Wuustwezel, Essen, Kalmthout, Wijnegem,
Wommelgem, Kapellen, Zoersel, Ranst, Schilde) uit ons werkingsgebied werken we aan
de zorg voor onroerend erfgoed via een intergemeentelijke onroerend erfgoeddienst
(IOED). De focus van deze werking ligt op het bouwkundig, archeologisch en
landschappelijk erfgoed. Met kennis van zaken wensen we het lokale erfgoed te
behouden, ontwikkelen en te ontsluiten. In dialoog met bewoners, belanghebbenden en
deskundige partners willen we het erfgoed onder de aandacht brengen, zo een groot
draagvlak creëren en het veilig te stellen voor de toekomst.
Om dit te realiseren zijn we op zoek naar iemand om ons team te versterken als
expert onroerend erfgoed waarbij expertise rond bouwkundig erfgoed en
affiniteit met archeologie belangrijk is.

Je takenpakket.

Expert onroerend erfgoed:

 Op maat van de streek, jaaractieplannen Onroerend Erfgoed opmaken en mee
helpen realiseren op basis van het reeds gemaakte beleidsplan IOED Voorkempen.
 Missing links detecteren, inventariseren en analyseren van het onroerende erfgoed
in de Voorkempen.
 Lokaal draagvlak voor het Voorkempens Onroerend Erfgoed creëren en integreren
in andere beleidsdomeinen en beleidsniveaus en dat in overleg met de
verschillende actoren binnen de regio.
 Bouwt het erfgoednetwerk verder uit en brengt alle actoren samen (besturen,
administraties, eigenaars, beheerders, deskundigen en vrijwilligers); zorgt voor
interdisciplinaire kruisbestuiving en coördineert gezamenlijke acties en projecten.
 Ontwikkeling, uitvoering en/of begeleiden van sensibiliserings-, communicatie- en
publieksgerichte initiatieven.
 Ondersteuning en advisering aan derden inzake het bestaande erfgoedinstrumentarium.
 Stimuleren en zoeken naar nieuwe initiatieven en/of projecten rond Onroerend
Erfgoed.
 Opmaak van erfgoedtoetsen voor bouwkundig erfgoed.
 Verankeren van het onroerend erfgoed in het ruimtelijk beleid.

Functieomschrijving:

Als toekomstig erfgoedcoördinator heb je grondige kennis van de wet- en regelgeving m.b.t. onroerend erfgoed en ken je de weg naar de relevante instanties m.b.t. onroerend erfgoed.
 Je vertaalt de strategische doelstellingen van het beleidsplan IOED Schelde- Durme in concrete acties.
 Je brengt het archeologisch, bouwkundig en landschappelijk erfgoed van de regio in kaart.
 Je ondersteunt de betrokken gemeentes bij de uitbouw van een onroerend erfgoedbeleid en adviseert hen bij vragen met betrekking tot concrete dossiers.
 Je bouwt een kennis- en consultatienetwerk uit.
 Je bent het centraal aanspreekpunt voor alle belanghebbenden binnen maar ook buiten het werkingsgebied m.b.t. onroerend erfgoedzorg – en beleid van de deelnemende gemeenten.
 Je blijft op de hoogte van de ontwikkelingen op vlak van archeologie, bouwkunde en monumenten- en landschappen.
 Je treedt op als bemiddelaar en stemt af met de verschillende gemeentelijke beleidsdomeinen i.f.v. het onroerend erfgoedbeleid.
 Je sensibiliseert en zet een doelgroepenwerking op met aandacht en respect voor vrijwilligers en erfgoedactoren.
 Je verbreedt het maatschappelijk en bestuurlijk draagvlak op vlak van onroerend erfgoed.
 Je bent verantwoordelijk voor de goede uitvoering van de IOED werking, zowel inhoudelijk als financieel.

Profiel:

 Je beschikt over een diploma (bij voorkeur master) in één van de volgende richtingen of gelijkaardige richtingen

Wij bieden:

 Contract van onbepaalde duur, onmiddellijke indiensttreding. Relevante anciënniteit kan worden meegenomen in onderling overleg. De werkgever werft de hierboven vermelde werknemer aan in de hoedanigheid van bediende, voor het uitoefenen van de functie van erfgoedcoördinator voor een onbepaalde duur specifiek voor de samenwerkingsovereenkomst IOED.

Praktisch:

Kandidaten sturen voor maandag 15 januari 2018 een e-mail naar info@rlsd.be, met als onderwerp ‘sollicitatie erfgoedcoördinator’ met volgende documenten in bijlage: ‘familienaam_voornaam_cv’ en ‘familienaam_voornaam_motivatiebrief’. Na een voorselectie op basis van CV en motivatie worden de weerhouden kandidaten per e-mail uitgenodigd voor een schriftelijke proef en sollicitatiegesprek. Deze vinden plaats op woensdag 24 januari (schriftelijk, namiddag) en vrijdag 26 januari (mondeling, hele dag).
