Op 5 juni 2018 om 16u (Rijksarchief, Vaartstraat 24, 3000 Leuven) vindt de boekvoorstelling plaats van De Blijde Inkomsten van de Brabantse hertogen. Macht, opstand en privileges in de vijftiende eeuw van Valerie Vrancken.

DE BLIJDE INKOMSTEN VAN DE BRABANTSE HERTOGEN - Macht, opstand en privileges in de vijftiende eeuw

De Blijde Inkomsten waren een begrip in laatmiddeleeuws Brabant. ​Telkens wanneer er een nieuwe hertog aantrad, dwongen politieke elites een uitgebreid inhuldigingscharter of Blijde Inkomst af. Dit document bevatte krijtlijnen voor het bestuur van het hertogdom, verankerde de inspraak van onderdanen en begrensde de hertogelijke macht.

Tot 1549 werden deze politieke contracten steeds heronderhandeld. In dit boek onderzoekt de auteur Valerie Vrancken voor het eerst waarom deze teksttraditie voortdurend werd aangepast. Op basis van onontgonnen bronmateriaal komt de historica tot vernieuwende inzichten in het politieke handelen van de late middeleeuwen.

OVER DE AUTEUR

Valerie Vrancken is doctor in de geschiedenis en wetenschappelijk medewerker bij het Leuvense Rijksarchief. Ze ontving de Prijs Bryce en Mary Lyon van de Koninklijke Commissie voor Geschiedenis.

Herinnering Pirenne-lezing: Prof. Thomas Noble, 8 mei, 18u30, Het Pand, Gent

De Pirennelezing zal dit jaar worden gehouden door de gerenommeerde Professor Thomas F.X. Noble (University of Notre Dame, USA). Gelieve in te schrijven vóór 16 april.

For about two decades many historians have been making the “material turn”.  That is, they have been incorporating physical objects more often and more effectively into their explanations and thereby building up a sub-field of the historical discipline entitled “material culture.”  This lecture joins that conversation by investigating some different material realities that are today known to us only by textual representations.  The lecture will draw upon different kinds of texts—poems and histories, for example—to ask what these texts actually say and how we might understand their words.  The lecture proceeds from the assumption that the objects described did really exist and that texts give us access to those objects even if their reality for us now can be no more that “virtual.”  The kinds of descriptions that the lecture includes are to be sharply differentiated from the classical genre of ekphrasis which artfully described things that existed in poetic but not in physical reality.

Thomas Noble is emeritus professor geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Notre Dame. Hij is lang directeeur geweest aan het Medieval Institute in Notre Dame. Zijn onderzoek behelst de geschiedenis van de stad Rome, de geschiedenis van het pausschap en relaties met de Karolingische hof, en de contacten en uitwisselingen tussen het Westen en Byzantium.
Een aantal van zijn belangrijkste publicaties zijn The Republic of St. Peter: The Birth of the Papal State, 680-825 (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press,1984), Images, Iconoclasm, and the Carolingians (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009), Envisioning Experience in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages: Dynamic Patterns in texts and Images, uitgegeven in samewerking met Giselle de Nie (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2012) en European Transformations: The Long Twelfth Century, uitgegeven in samewerking met John Van Engen Notre Dame (University of Notre Dame Press, 2012).

The Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams team kindly invites you to a lecture “Byzantine Scribes and their Paratexts” by Georgi Parpulov.

​Abstract:

The study of paratexts (additions) in medieval Greek manuscripts has made great advances over the past decade. My paper will discuss some of the ways in which such paratexts were selected and transmitted from one manuscript to another.

Georgi Parpulov studied history at the University of Sofia and art history at the University of Chicago. He subsequently did curatorial work at the Walters Art Museum, the J Paul Getty Museum and the British Museum, and taught at the University of Oxford.​

Cfp “The Medieval Literary Canon in the Digital Age” UGent, 17–18 September 2018

Submissions of abstracts for the international conference “The Medieval Literary Canon in the Digital Age,” to be held at Ghent University from 17-18 September 2018.

An often repeated promise of the digital humanities, in the wake of the “computational turn,” is that the wide availability and accessibility of historical texts would enable scholars to breach the restrictions of a literary canon. The present international conference wishes to explore how exactly the digital humanities can provide such insights for medieval studies, in which such a promise raises critical questions.

(1) In spite of the computational turn, much of the digital scholarship for the Middle Ages still seems to hinge on well-conserved and therefore well-known theological and literary authorities, whose texts have been reproduced continuously in subsequent editions and translations. To what extent does today’s computational research manage to escape the straitjacket of the traditional canon?

(2) Considering that in the past decades, medieval scholars have become increasingly sensitive to the materiality of textual transmission in the Middle Ages, the virtual, normative and reductive character of a digital environment are not always compatible to their research interests.

 

As the emancipation of the digital humanities from their merely supportive role is proclaimed increasingly, and as the tools for digital medieval studies proliferate (e.g. digital scholarly editing, computational stylistics, digital palaeography, digital stemmatology, …), this conference welcomes papers —based on either case studies or broader research questions— that both problematize the specialized character of medieval literary production and demonstrate the potential for computational criticism to “breach” or “widen” the medieval canon through digital tools.

The conference, to which we will accept 8 scholars in addition to the confirmed speakers (cfr. infra) will consist exclusively of plenary sessions, with ample time for discussion. The conference committee encourages proposal submissions by both established and junior researchers. Please send abstracts (ca. 300 words) and a five line biography via email to Jeroen De Gussem (jedgusse.degussem@UGent.be) by the ​10th of May. Participants will receive a notification concerning the acceptance of their application by the end of May.

We expect from our applicants that they have the ability of covering their own travel costs. Accepted speakers are offered lunches and an invitation to our conference dinner. Accepted speakers from abroad (any country other than Belgium) will also be offered up to 3 hotel nights in Ghent.

Digital humanities: new tools for the medievalist (Namur and Louvain-la-Neuve, 7th-8th May 2018)

Op 7-8 mei 2018 organiseert de Réseau des médiévistes belges de langue française de  twaalfde (Frans/Engels) studiedag “Humanités numériques: des nouveaux outils pour le médiéviste / Digital humanities: new tools for the medievalist” in samenwerking met de onderzoeksgroepen « PraME – Pratiques médiévales de l’écrit » (Université de Namur) et « H37 – Histoire et cultures graphiques » (Université catholique de Louvain). L’informatique, on le sait, s’est aujourd’hui imposée comme un outil incontournable pour le médiéviste. Depuis plusieurs décennies, bon nombre d’historiens, d’historiens de l’art et de philologues du Moyen Âge appuient en effet leurs travaux sur des corpus diplomatiques, des éditions numériques et des bases de données dont la conception a, parfois, été pensée dès le milieu des années 1980. Pourtant, en dépit des apparences, l’exploitation de ces instruments de recherche et de ces corpus demeure globalement en-deçà de leurs potentialités. Hormis quelques notables exceptions, rares sont les médiévistes à s’être engagés dans une approche quantitative globale et fouillée de ces ensembles documentaires numérisés. Les formidables instruments de travail à disposition des chercheurs, dont le Thesaurus Diplomaticus et sa nouvelle mouture des Diplomata Belgica constituent d’excellents exemples belges, sont ainsi trop souvent cantonnés à une fonction unique : celle de servir de répertoires d’éditions. Sans être exclusives des approches plus traditionnelles – bien au contraire –, de nouvelles méthodes d’analyse permettent pourtant d’interroger sur d’autres bases ces corpus documentaires. La portée et la pertinence de ces approches s’accroissant au fil des ans, tout laisse présager qu’elles autoriseront, bientôt, l’émergence de nouvelles formes d’exploration de l’histoire, des arts et des littératures du Moyen Âge, dans lesquelles l’expérimentation et l’innovation méthodologiques occuperont sans aucun doute une place majeure.

L’ambition de cette rencontre bilingue (anglais/français) destinée en particulier aux jeunes chercheurs et aux étudiants sera, d’une part, d’illustrer combien et comment les humanités numériques contribuent à redynamiser de nombreux champs de recherche en études médiévales et, d’autre part, de fournir une première initiation à certains outils de travail dont les rudiments peuvent s’acquérir au prix d’efforts mesurés. La focale portera sur trois méthodes d’analyse quantitative des sources textuelles : 1) l’analyse de réseaux, qui, par l’utilisation de calculs et de graphes, permet d’étudier les relations entre entités sociales, et ainsi de mieux comprendre certains phénomènes sociaux ; 2) le text mining, qui vise à explorer de vastes ensembles documentaires numérisés pour en extraire des données textuelles exploitables par le chercheur ; 3) la stylométrie, dont l’ambition est d’étudier le style propre d’un auteur par le recours à des outils statistiques et, partant, de jeter une lumière nouvelle sur les questions d’attribution.

Concrètement, la rencontre s’articulera en deux temps. La première journée, organisée à l’Université de Namur, illustrera les potentialités de l’analyse de réseaux, du text mining et de la stylométrie dans le cadre de présentations mêlant réflexions méthodologiques et études de cas. La seconde journée, prévue à l’Université catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve), adoptera, quant à elle, une visée plus pédagogique, puisqu’elle proposera une initiation aux méthodes de l’analyse de réseaux, du text mining et de la stylométrie à travers des ateliers ouverts aux débutants. Ces journées d’étude ont avant tout l’ambition de défricher le terrain en vue de l’éventuelle organisation d’autres activités liées aux humanités numériques. Elles aboutiront à la mise en ligne d’un répertoire synthétique décrivant les potentialités et les limites des outils numériques utilisés par les intervenants.

Ce rendez-vous sera organisé conjointement par le Réseau des Médiévistes belges de Langue française (groupe de contact du F.R.S.-FNRS), qui a depuis quelques années entamé sa « mue numérique », et par les groupes de recherche « PraME – Pratiques médiévales de l’écrit » (Université de Namur) et « H37 – Histoire et cultures graphiques » (Université catholique de Louvain).

Semaine d’études médiévale CESCM (18-29 Juni, Poitiers)

Le CESCM (Centre d’Études Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévales) organise depuis 1954 une session annuelle internationale francophone de formation, qui regroupe une cinquantaine d’étudiants, doctorants et jeunes chercheurs, français et étrangers. Les conférences, les séances de travail autour des ressources documentaires, les excursions et visites au programme des stagiaires sont proposées par des spécialistes du Moyen Âge venus du monde entier.

Cette manifestation interdisciplinaire, unique en son genre, a contribué à construire et à renforcer, depuis une soixantaine d’années, un solide réseau national et international dans le domaine de l’étude du Moyen Âge.

Pirenne-lezing Thomas F.X. Noble: ‘Virtual Materiality’, 8 mei 2018, Gent


Op 8 Mei 2018 vindt de jaarlijkse prestigieuze Pirenne-lezing plaats, georganiseerd door de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek en gezamenlijk gefinancierd door de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek en de Henri Pirenne Institute for Medieval Studies. Dit jaar werd Emeritus Professor Thomas F.X. Noble (University of Notre Dame, USA) uitgenodigd om te spreken over ‘Virtual Materiality’.

For about two decades many historians have been making the “material turn”.  That is, they have been incorporating physical objects more often and more effectively into their explanations and thereby building up a sub-field of the historical discipline entitled “material culture.”  This lecture joins that conversation by investigating some different material realities that are today known to us only by textual representations.  The lecture will draw upon different kinds of texts—poems and histories, for example—to ask what these texts actually say and how we might understand their words.  The lecture proceeds from the assumption that the objects described did really exist and that texts give us access to those objects even if their reality for us now can be no more that “virtual.”  The kinds of descriptions that the lecture includes are to be sharply differentiated from the classical genre of ekphrasis which artfully described things that existed in poetic but not in physical reality.

Thomas Noble is emeritus professor geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Notre Dame. Hij is lang directeeur geweest aan het Medieval Institute in Notre Dame. Zijn onderzoek behelst de geschiedenis van de stad Rome, de geschiedenis van het pausschap en relaties met de Karolingische hof, en de contacten en uitwisselingen tussen het Westen en Byzantium.
Een aantal van zijn belangrijkste publicaties zijn The Republic of St. Peter: The Birth of the Papal State, 680-825 (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press,1984), Images, Iconoclasm, and the Carolingians (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009), Envisioning Experience in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages: Dynamic Patterns in texts and Images, uitgegeven in samewerking met Giselle de Nie (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2012) en European Transformations: The Long Twelfth Century, uitgegeven in samewerking met John Van Engen Notre Dame (University of Notre Dame Press, 2012).

De lezing gaat van start om 18.30 uur in zaal de Oude Infirmerie in Het Pand, Onderbergen 1, 9000 Gent. Achteraf wordt er een receptie aangeboden op dezelfde locatie (gratis voor leden van de VWM, 10 euro voor niet-leden). Contactpersoon: Micol Long (micol.long@ugent.be).
