Het gevarieerde programma van de 19e Mediëvistendag in Deventer is inmiddels definitief. Het secretariaat hoopt op een grote aanwezigheid van Vlaamse mediëvisten.

Recent is de digitale editie vervolledigd van de registers van de klerken van de graven van Holland en Zeeland in de eerste helft van de veertiende eeuw. Het gaat om 25 volumes (samen ca. 2000 pagina’s) die door J.W.J. Burgers werden uitgegeven. U kan deze omvangrijke digitale publicatie online raadplegen via deze link.

LECTIO, the Leuven Centre for the study of the transmission of texts and ideas in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, kindly invites you to attend the next Conference, entitled ‘Shaping Authority’. How did a person become an authority in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance?

In this two-day conference (see the digital flyer with schedule) we will focus on the mechanisms and strategies by which participants in intellectual life at large have shaped the authority of historical persons; and which circumstances have led to the disintegrations of the authority of persons previously considered to be authoritative.

This conference takes place on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December 2013 in the Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe, Janseniusstraat 1, 3000 Leuven.

Korte presentatie onderzoeksproject

Aan de nieuwe promovendi Mediëvistiek,

Op 15 november 2013 houdt de Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek in samenwerking met de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek de jaarlijkse Mediëvistendag, ditmaal in Deventer. De organisatie berust bij de mediëvisten van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en het secretariaat van de Werkgroep.

De Mediëvistendag is een ontmoetingsdag voor Nederlandse en Vlaamse mediëvisten, waarop zij kennis kunnen nemen van de recente ontwikkelingen op het vakgebied. De dag ziet er in grote lijnen als volgt uit: In de ochtend en het begin van de middag voordrachten van Prof. dr. Sita Steckel (WWU Münster), dr. Samuel Mareel (UGent) en dr. Suzan Folkerts (RUG). Aan het einde van de middag zijn er korte presentaties van (in elk geval de zojuist begonnen) promovendi.

De presentaties op de Mediëvistendag van de nieuw aangestelde promovendi vormen een vast onderdeel van het opleidingsprogramma van de onderzoekschool. Uiteraard weten we dat jullie project nog in een pril stadium is, maar het is zinvol om vroeg een breder wetenschappelijk publiek over je onderzoeksplannen te informeren. Met een korte powerpointpresentatie kun je je visitekaartje afgeven en de kans grijpen kennis te maken met vakgenoten die je vast vaker zult gaan zien. Je presentatie zou kunnen bestaan uit opmerkingen over de invalshoek of discipline van waaruit je werkt, een globale vraagstelling en een zeer korte beschrijving van je materiaal. Let wel: het gaat om een korte kennismaking.

Brief presentation of research project

To the new Medieval Studies PhD students,

On 15 November 2013, the Research School for Medieval Studies, together with the Flemish Medievalist Association, will be holding the annual Medieval Studies Day, this time in Deventer. The event is organized by the medievalists from the University of Groningen and the secretariat of the Association.

The Medieval Studies Day offers Dutch and Flemish medievalists the opportunity to meet each other and exchange information about recent developments in the field. The programme for the day in general outlines will be: In the morning and early afternoon lectures will be held by Prof. dr. Sita Steckel (WWU Münster), dr. Samuel Mareel (UGent) en dr. Suzan Folkerts (RUG). Later in the afternoon PhD students (including at least all new students) give short presentations on their research.

The presentations on Medieval Studies Day by new PhD students are a fixed part of the training programme for the research school. We are aware that your project is still in the early stages, but it is always beneficial to inform a wider academic audience about your research. You can make yourself known by means of a short PowerPoint presentation and use the opportunity to get to know colleagues who you will undoubtedly meet regularly in the future. Your presentation could comprise comments about your line of approach or the discipline from which you are working, a general research question and a very brief description of your material. Please be aware that your presentation is meant as a short introduction.

Each presentation may last circa 10 minutes; as soon as we know how many registrations there are, you will receive more precise information.

Van donderdag 17 tot zaterdag 19 oktober vindt in Parijs het colloquium L’art au service du prince: La politique monumentale, artistique et culturelle des États princiers et seigneuriaux. Paradigme italien, expérience européenne (vers 1250-vers 1550) plaats.

In het kader van een interuniversitair programma heeft men een nieuw diploma ontwikkeld, genaamd “Diplôme d’études médiévales, intitulé Diplôme européen d’étude des sources latines écrites du moyen âge”. Meer dan twintig universiteiten zijn hierbij betrokkken. Geïnteresseerde studenten kunnen hun kandidatuur voor 1 oktober 2013 per mail indienen bij diploma-coördinator Giacinta Spinosa (giacintaspinosa@tiscalinet.it). In bijlage vindt u in deze brochure.

Naar aanleiding van de opening van het nieuwe werkjaar, organiseert de VWM naar goede gewoonte de traditionele Pirennelezing. De Pirennelezing zal dit jaar worden gehouden door de gerenommeerde archeoloog prof. dr. em. Martin Carver (University of York, UK). Carver specialiseerde zich in vroegmiddeleeuwse archeologie en geniet internationaal vooral bekendheid als leider van de beroemde opgravingen bij Sutton Hoo. Hij is tevens jaren lang hoofdredacteur geweest van het toonaangevende archeologische tijdschrift Antiquity. Martin Carvers (Engelstalige) lezing draagt de titel ‘Commerce and Cult. Re-inventing the European town in the 5-8^th century’ – een korte samenvatting gaat hieronder. Carver zal worden ingeleid door prof. dr. Dries Tys (Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

De Pirennelezing zal plaatsvinden op donderdag 21 november 2013, om 18u in de Sint-Pietersabdij te Gent (in de ‘warmtekamer’). Iedereen is van harte welkom op de receptie die aansluitend op de lezing wordt georganiseerd. De lezing is vrij toegankelijk, ook voor niet-leden. Wij vragen wel dat geïnteresseerden zich voorhand aanmelden via een seintje bij mike.kestemont@ua.ac.be of stefan.meysman@ugent.be.

Commerce and Cult

Socio-economic initiatives in the 5-8th century

Pirenne and his many admirers and successors have regarded the Roman-Medieval transition as primarily a historical conundrum explained by economic imperatives. This archaeological study considers the role of cult in attracting and mobilising political and commercial action, introducing the topic with the recent revisions to the Neolithic urban revolution provoked by the discoveries at Göbeckli Tepe, and developing it with three case studies from 5-8th century Europe: Helgö in Sweden, Portmahomack in Scotland and Comacchio in Italy.

The aim is to assess the role of cult sites, whether Christian (ie monasteries) or non-Christian in creating congregational destinations and generating wealth and investment through ‘the salvation industry’. The monastic business-model provides a parallel alternative to the convincingly sketched proto-commercial groups operating along rivers or from creek sites around the northern coasts.   Whether merchant-driven or monk-driven, these movements offer a plebian counterpoise to the picture of change as inexorably controlled by the landowning elite.

Proposing that belief systems provide an engine driving both commercial and imperial ambition is not intended to offer a blanket explanation. Rather, it intends to give the archaeological agenda a push in the broader direction of investigating the role of cult in the revival of commerce.  The monumental map of Europe in 5-8th century hints strongly at the competitive expression by different communities of “the right way forward” in which all kinds of initiative were on the table, rooted in belief but emerging as political action.

Hierbij vindt u de call for papers van een internationale conferentie “Medieval Documents as Artefacts, 1100-1600”. Deze bijeenkomst zal plaatsvinden te Maastricht van 5 tot 6 februari 2014 en is een initiatief van de werkgroep Schrift en Schriftdragers in de Nederlanden in de Middeleeuwen (SSNM), in samenwerking met het Huygens-Instituut ING en het Regionaal Historisch Centrum van Limburg.
